LSE Alumni
2011 New Year's Reception with
Commissioner Georgieva
For their New
Year’s Reception 2011, we didn’t think twice and
invited the biggest political fish the LSE scene in Brussels
has to offer: for one evening, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian
Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva, a research fellow
at the School between 1987 and 1988, put on her academic hat
again and gave an impressive account of her first year in
office in front of more than a hundred LSE Alumni residing
in Belgium. Commissioner Georgieva filled the beautiful UK
ambassador's residence with pictures and anecdotes of her
full agenda around the world to manage the EU’s crisis
response to mega-disasters like the earthquakes in Haiti,
Chile and China. Hosted by the British Ambassador to Belgium
Jonathan Brenton this event marked a formidable kick-off of
the year 2011. |

LSE
Expert Seminar with LSE Professor Iain Begg
'Is Europe 2020 likely to succeed or fail in integrating

LSE Expert Talk

|

|
|
| |
An exclusive, members-only seminar with LSE Professor
Iain Begg on the Europe 2020 strategies, followed by a walking
supper.
Professor Begg started by giving a presentation (see here),
followed by an interactive discussion with around 25alumni
in the best LSE tradition. The thrust of the presentation
was that the EU appears to be at one of those tipping points
at which paradigm change could occur. A response to the
crisis and the imperative of dealing with climate change
point to an obvious new narrative for economic governance.
But there are conflicting demands on policy-makers and persistent
ambiguities about how to interpret terms like sustainable
development and social cohesion. The talk discussed these
influences and explored what they imply for Europe 2020.
Afterwards, the discussion continued over drinks and a buffet
provided by the LSE Alumni Association Belgium.
You can download his presentation here.
Professor Iain Begg is a Professorial Research
Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics
and Political Science. His main research work is on the
political economy of European integration and EU economic
governance. He has directed and participated in a series
of research projects on different facets of EU policy and
his current projects include studies on the governance of
EU economic and social policy, the EU's Lisbon strategy,
the social impact of globalisation and reform of the EU
budget. Other recent research projects include work on policy
co-ordination under EMU and cohesion policy.
He has published extensively in academic
journals and served as co-editor of the Journal of Common
Market Studies, the leading academic journal focusing on the
study of European integration, from 1998 to 2003. He has undertaken
a number of advisory roles, including being a member of a
groupe de prospective on the future of cohesion policy and
being called as an expert witness on EU issues by the House
of Commons Treasury Committee, the House of Lords European
Communities Committee and the European Parliament. He is a
frequent contributor to international conferences on EU economic
policy issues and is regularly solicited for interviews by
journalists. |

LSE
Expert Talk & Christmas Reception
"How can the
EU's Trade Priorities lead Europe out of Recession?"
8 December
2009, 7pm at the Representation of the Freistaat Sachsen
|
LSE Expert Talk series
aim at bringing together high profile LSE Alumni to discuss
current hot topics.
|
|
Dear LSE Alumni,
The LSE Alumni Association Belgium (LSE AAB) invited to a
new LSE Expert Talk and our annual Christmas Reception.
On 8 December 2009, our speakers addressed
EU Trade policy in the context of a global recession and risk
of protectionism, the impact of the Lisbon Treaty as well
as the latest developments in the WTO negotiations. What role
the external commercial policy will play in the new EU2020
Strategy, how Europe will deal with a potential "green
protectionism" and rising competition from emerging economies
were also on the agenda.
The following distinguished speakers and LSE Alumni debated
how the EU's Trade policies can show the way towards sustainable
growth:
Roderick Abbott, former Deputy Director-General
of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) 2002-2005 and former
Deputy Director-General in DG Trade. Abbott has a degree in
classical studies from Merton College, Oxford. He was a visiting
Fellow at LSE’s International Relations Department and
the International Trade Policy Unit.
Edward Bannerman, Member of the Cabinet
of EU Commissioner Baroness Ashton. Before moving to Brussels,
he worked as European Affairs adviser covering economics and
finance at the UK Embassy in Paris. Earlier in his career,
he was head of the Business and Economics Unit of the Centre
for European Reform think tank in London, and he has carried
out economics-based consultancy projects, including for the
Commission's DG Trade. Prior to that, he worked for the Management
Consultancy firm KPMG. He graduated from the LSE in 1994 (MSc
Politics of the World Economy).
Razeen Sally, Professor of International
Political Economy at the LSE with a focus on Trade Policy.
He is also Director of the European Centre for International
Political Economy (ECIPE), an international economic policy
think tank based in Brussels. He lectures and consults for
governments, business and international organisations, and
comments regularly on international economic policy issues
in the media. He received his PhD from the LSE in 1992, and
did post-doctoral research at INSEAD in France.
Peter Witt, former Deputy Permanent Representative
of Germany to the EU from 2001 to 2008. Earlier in his career,
Peter headed Germany's office to the multilateral trade negotiations
(“Uruguay Round”) in Geneva for 9 years and negotiated
the set-up of the World Trade Organisation. He chaired the
Gatt’s/WTO’s Balance of Payments Committee for
five years and was Chairman of the working party for Lithuania’s
accession to the WTO. Peter Witt is a fully trained lawyer,
with a PhD in law from Freiburg/ Br. and an LL.M. from LSE.
Peter Witt joined GPlusEurope in 2008 after retirement from
35 years in the civil service.
The talk started at 7pm, followed by a Q&A
session. Afterwards we invited to a Christmas Reception
with mulled wine, traditional British minced pies, sandwiches
and German Christmas stollen and cookies.
This event replaced our monthly LSE Wednesday drinks.
The event was kindly hosted by the Representation
of the Freistaat Sachsen at Rue d'Auderghem 67, 1040
Etterbeek (map).

Executive summary - Confessions
of an ordinary economist - The lessons from the financial crisis.
The purpose of Mr. De Callataÿ’s
new book is neither to sketch out what the future of the capitalism
could be nor to describe in details how financial markets operate
but to offer a broad, non-technical analysis of the financial crisis.
Presenting the origins of the crisis, the first part of the book
details the multiple dimensions of the responsibility of financial
institutions but deals as well with the role of both the man in
the street and the authorities. The second part of the book goes
about the consequences of the financial crisis. It looks in turn
into private wealth, public finance, confidence, indebtedness, the
financial landscape, business investment, consumption, inflation,
and interest rates. The third part is devoted to the strategy to
exit the crisis. It deals in particular with the reform of the financial
system and its institutions and with the budgetary stance. Foreword
by Peter Praet, director National Bank of Belgium. To be published
by Roularta Books in French and Dutch in May 2009.
